That's another positive aspect of virtual shopping I
could do it after dark, I could do it in my pajamas if I chose. I realize I may need to do one more sweep to pull together my evening wear before I cull the pieces down into the keepers. Some I have chosen for today I selected by a simply criterion, they are beautiful, truly sigh-worthy. Would I necessarily dare to wear? Maybe not, but I want to savor them a little longer.

This is the dress that causes the most problems for me. Let me tell you why: I hate prints. But I love this dress. It floats, it has a YSL gypsy vibe going on, it looks like it could be one of those rare forever after gowns. I don't know, I'm on the fence. |

Nothing is more virtual, unfortunately, in my life than evening wear. Once upon a time I had many, many evening gowns, separates and a divine long, black velvet redingote that was lost in a long ago move. Some are still hanging in my closet. I should part with them, but somehow I can't. I'm particularly enamored of a an exquisite and exquisitely simple Valentine number that made me feel gorgeous the instant I slipped it over my head.
I shall finish my virtual evening shopping next week and construct my complete fall/winter wardrobe. I know, I know. It's about time.

***All three of these, admittedly drop dead gorgeous gowns, will be/would be taken immediately to Madame Sneady, my seamstress, for adjustments to the slits, slashes and no linings where there should be linings -- at least for me. I prefer to have people look into my big, blue eyes when they speak to me rather than lower, if you see what I mean.

Love, love, love the Black Cap Sleeve dress with "twinkles" on it. Absolutely Fabulous.
All of the Elie Sabb gowns are gorgeous, but honestly in a money is no object situation, I'd but the cream one in the first photo and the black sequined one. Classic, timeless, no need to take it to the seamstress other than maybe take the hem up.

I also hate prints, and although I liked the gown you showed at first, I went back to look at it, and it's already getting on my nerves. I love all the other gowns, but I think cap sleeves are hard to wear, or maybe just for me? Very bad on my already difficult upper arms. Just looked at the print gown again, and am sort of liking it right now. Luckily, no use for evening gowns here.
I'm with coffeeaddict on this one -- all the dress are beautiful, but those two Elie Saab dresses, the first one and the black twinkling one, bring longing to a whole new painful level. And the red one, too...

The print/ not for me in the evening. I think of afternoon weddings and daytime grand events.
Tish I attended so many galas in the past and have held on to some of my gowns; like you just because I cannot let go. Recalling one I did....a Carmen Marc Volvo all lace with huge padded shoulders from the 80's!

ADORE the Saabs. Every one - except the print. Adore, adore, adore. Might even work on a "little woman," and especially enjoy seeing some sparkle and a bit of sleeve.
That red Elie Saab dress is gorgeous as is the black gown...now all we need is an event worthy of their wear.
I heard a funny story the other day where a police man was unable to give out a speeding ticket to a very ample woman whose cleavage got and held his attention. He got so ruffled he had to send her on her way...

LOVE the black, red, and wine Elie Saabs. The beiges I find a bit dull for evening. Not loving the print, either, although the flowy cut is nice. Just wish I had somewhere to go which called for such a gown! Not in my lifestyle...
I love the Elie Saab dresses, especially the first one. Classic and easily accessorized, as you've said. Or maybe the wine one at the end. Oh me oh my how will I ever choose?

You are right about the lining, though. I have no desire to be mistaken for a strip-tease dancer!

Oh, Tish....so so beautiful & elegant. I think we have almost the same tastes, I always prefer the elegant over the costume, however, I think I add a touch of whimsy or a lot of jewelry that you probably wouldn't. I'm doing a post tomorrow on the perfect look of fashion today for us over 40's. xx's
Yes, all of them are gorgeous..but I am going out on a limb and say I really like the print most of all..it is stunning!!
Well, over the last two down-sizings I have been forced to finally get rid of the majority of my evening wear--all of it in a size that I will never see again! But still how I loved them all--what fine memories of being a young woman in Manhattan with all of her life in front of her!

The Elie Saab and Valentino are glorious. l particularly like the draping on the final Elie Saab.
I love them all -- well, not the second one -- but my favorite is the very first one. I don't have the legs for that last one anymore but in my youth I would have worn it in a heartbeat.

Good goddess, you have exquisite taste. I see what you mean about the floral Elie Saab (it's alluring in a strange and unpredictable way). But my heart and soul belong to the Alberta Feretti black lace (with lining sewn in, of course).

I love it- Elie Saab's fall couture line was one of my top picks for my fall fashion review. Great minds think alike! And I agree on that stunning cream column (first photo) it would lend itself to so much or, if you chose, to nothing more at all.
Brits wear plenty of sparkle and such on a more casual basis, so I do get to wear fun things now and then, but an evening dress is far too serious and has no place in my lifestyle.
Would love a post showing us your evening gowns, even though you no longer wear them. I'm sure there would be some very interesting stories to tell...
